Tile Roof Loaded

Roof tiles are loaded in stacks such as these prior to installation. The wood rafters and trusses that support the roof actually deflect or sag downward up to 2-4 inches from the weight of tile. When re-roofing, your structure will relax and expand upwards slightly after the roof is removed. Once the tile is loaded as in the photo, tile manufacturers recommend allowing 4-7 days for the wood rafters to settle back into their original position before installing. In new construction with rafters that have never held any weight, a 30 day deflection period is recommend. Installing tile before these waiting periods can cause the adhesive mortar bonds to separate as the roofs settles.
