Tile roofs have many functional and aesthetic
advantages and have a wider variety of styles and colors than
most other roofing materials. Not all structures are able to
safely support the weight of a tile roof. When in doubt, seek
the advice of an engineer or licensed roofing contractor as
to whether your roof is capable of this. If you currently have
a tile roof, replacing it with tile should not be a problem.
If you do not have a tile roof currently but would like one
installed, again, seek the advice of an engineer or licensed
roofing contractor. Also try checking the original blueprint
for your house or the property card. If your house was originally
constructed with tile then reinstalling tile should be safe.
Tiles are generally concrete or clay and come with a painted
on color, or made color-thru. Color-thru is when the clay or
concrete is manufactured with the pigments & oxides mixed into
the material, as opposed to painted on the surface only. Tile
can be installed using nails, screws, mortar, or adhesive foam.
The installation method utilized oftentimes is dictated by local
building codes, slope, height and wind uplift requirements.
Incorrect choice of attachment method can greatly affect the
water tightness, stability and integrity of the roof. Prior
to installing tile an underlayment system is installed, which
is usually a layer of #30 felt nailed to the wood deck with
a layer of #90 hot mopped to the felt. This underlayment system
is what keeps your roof watertight. The tile functions more
as an aesthetic, and also provides heat reflecting/insulating
properties. Broken or missing tile are not always indicative
of a roof leak, however, it is a good idea to replace broken
tile to prevent future problems. Tile roofs have a minimum pitch
requirement of 2":12".
